You can help us make a difference by supporting
Child Life and Creative Arts through the Schapiro Child Life Program
When young children or teens are hospitalized or experience other healthcare situations, they may face difficult and potentially stressful events that can affect their ability to cope and move forward in life successfully. Our certified Child Life Specialists at The Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai help patients navigate these experiences by providing developmentally appropriate interventions that reduce stress and normalize their experience, such as therapeutic play, procedural preparation and age-appropriate education.
Child Life practice in healthcare settings promotes optimal development of children, families and their support systems and reduces the impact of adverse childhood healthcare events. As integral members of the healthcare team, child life professionals provide children, families, and their support systems opportunities to cope, gain a sense of mastery, and engage in self-expression. Child Life intervention minimizes both the immediate and long-term effects of stress, anxiety, and psychosocial trauma, ultimately empowering children, families, and their support systems to reach their full potential.
The goals of the Schapiro Child Life Program are to:
- Encourage optimal development of children facing a broad range of challenging healthcare experiences
- Educate patients and families and reduce their stress and anxiety
- Provide normal or home-like activities and experiences as needed for growth and development
- Create opportunities for children to express their feelings and bolster their self-esteem and independence
- Provide emotional support for families
Your donation to Child Life helps provide the critical services described here, which aren’t currently reimbursed by healthcare payers. Your support can make a difference for a child we serve… today, and well into their future.
